AIS/B Parents
REF.: IMPROVEMENTS AND CLARIFICATIONS AISB
Dear AIS/B Parents,
We want to share with you the great improvements taking place at AIS/B. First, we are quickly finishing our brand-new covered multi-purpose court. This is a great addition to the school’s infrastructure as it will protect our students from the strong sun as they practice athletic activities in both physical education classes and after-school extracurricular sports and activities.
In addition, we are remodeling the Kindergarten classroom, and repainting the school interior. We are also moving Mr. Rodney Olguin’s office as he will need more space to fulfill his joint duties of Secondary Director and IB Coordinator. We have many AIS/B professionals with new responsibilities like Mr. Olguin. Ms. Paola Villarroel will now be the Primary Director, Curriculum Director, Conduct Director and General Counselor. Ms. Selena Skelly-Dorn is beginning to exercise her functions as General Director and is in close communication with AdvancED/SACS, coordinating with them on AIS/B’s school improvement plan. Ms. Skelly-Dorn has her Masters of Education in International Education from Framingham University, and her Bachelors in English and American Literature from Brown University, where she also completed the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program, gaining her Rhode Island Teaching Certification in 7-12 English.
We are also pleased to announce that we have placed highly qualified, certified, U.S. educated, native English speaking Americans in several positions in the school. Teal Perry Cuellar will now be teaching 9-12 English, including IB English A1 and A2, as well as 11th and 12th IB Theory of Knowledge, SAT Preparation and English Extended Essay. Mrs. Cuellar is very well-prepared for this position as she has her Masters of Education in International Education and Curriculum Development from George Mason University where she studied the IB curriculum specifically and her Bachelors in English and Spanish with a focus in Literature from Emory University. She also has her Virginia teacher’s certification. Mr. Jim Jansen will now be teaching 7th and 8th grade English. Mr. Jansen has his Masters of Arts in Teaching from Willamette University and gained his Oregon State Teaching Certificate in K-9. Ms. Vanya Anaya will be teaching Sixth Grade. Ms. Anaya comes to us from Manhattan, New York City, where she completes her Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education at New York University and obtained her New York Teaching Certificate in Childhood Education Grades 1-6. Mr. Victor Balian will be teaching Fifth Grade. He has his Bachelors in Education from St. Petersburg State University and his TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate from the Canadian Institute of English and has an excellent reputation as a teacher in Cochabamba educational institutes. We are lucky to have these teachers, in addition to our returning exceptional, highly qualified educators. The outstanding caliber and experience of our teachers is a key factor in creating our school’s academic excellence.
At the same time as we inform you about the school’s improvement, we also want to clarify some of the additional expenses for inscription:
First, we want to clarify that although, by law, the school must require that all students have accident insurance, parents may purchase the insurance they choose. The school offers one option, but parents can choose any accident insurance that is most convenient for them, simply giving the school a photocopy of their insurance policy.
Secondly, we want to make clear that the PTA (Parent’s Club) fee is at the disposition of Parents and the Parent’s Club for school projects as they see fit. Their financial account was given to the PTA President last year and this will continue. Any parents who would like to take part in the decision of how to invest this money are welcome to attend the PTA meetings.
Thirdly, we want to inform parents that in the 2009-10 school year the technology fee was used for 3 new computers, 2 printers, 1 scanner, 11 security cameras with their complete system, a new camera, precision equipment (two interface and sensor equipments) for Physics, accessories for the photocopy machine, and accessories for the computer lab including processors, hard-discs, headphones, etc. In the 2010-11 school year we plan to use it for 8 new computers, 4 printers, a DVD burner and a new photocopy machine.
Fourth, the yearbook fee can be paid until January, 2011.
We are implementing the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) exams that will be given in 3rd through 8th grade in order to be in compliance with AdvancED/SACS requirements. These tests will help us determine your child’s instructional level and measure their academic growth throughout the school year and from year to year in the areas of Reading, Language Arts and Mathematics. At the same time, MAP tests will provide us with data to guide our teachers and school’s instructional decisions, helping us to become a more effective school. MAP tests are unique in that as they are computerized and individualized, they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude towards testing. And with MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We will continue to administer SAT, TOEFL and IB exams in 11th and 12th grade and will also use this data to guide our instructional decisions. The MAP fee is a one-time yearly fee that covers all exams that will be administered three times throughout the year.
We also want to remind all parents that by paying the entire 2010-11 school year now, you will have a 10% discount.
Finally, we want all parents to know what a great investment an AIS/B education truly is! Our 2010 graduates received a total of over one million dollars in scholarships from U.S. universities alone. Out of this year’s graduating class of 18 students, nine students, almost 50%, will be continuing their studies abroad. Five of these nine will be studying in the U.S., on scholarship basis, three will be attending Universities in Europe and one will be continuing his studies in Korea. Out of the graduating class, nine students received the complete IB diploma and five students received IB certificates.
We have a new website – www.aisb.edu.bothat we encourage you to check out! It will continue to be updated and improved. We have also begun a new project to make our school not only local, but national, beginning with a presentation to families in Trinidad.
We hope this letter clarifies any confusion about school fees and at the same time, informs you about the school’s improvements. We are sure that 2010-11 will be a wonderful year full of advances for AIS/B!
Sincerely,
Selena Skelly-Dorn, M.Ed.

AISB/B Parents
REF.: START OF 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR
Dear AIS/B Parents,
It is with great pleasure that I address you as the AIS/B General Director. I am proud to be part of an educational institution of such excellent caliber and I am sure we will continue to improve. My driving goal as Director is to improve AIS/B so that it can reach its full potential and be the best school possible which of course can only be achieved by all of us together (administration, teachers, staff, parents, and students) working as a unified team in our shared pursuit of this common end. It is reassuring to know that AIS/B can rely on parents and families such as yourselves to help us become a better school, and we must be united, proactive and positive in this pursuit. Negativity and criticism will not move us forward, but proactive energy and constructive criticism with plans to improve will. We want you to be involved and suggestions and ideas are always welcome.
Classes begin on Monday, August 9 with an Inauguration Act for the new school year 2010-11 that will commence at 8:00 a.m. We cordially invite all parents to attend. Students should arrive at 7:50 to be ready. Attendance and punctuality throughout the year are crucial to your child´s learning and academic success so I strongly recommend that your child is in school every day and arrives to school daily at 7:50 so he/she can be in class by 8:00 a.m. You will find our 2010-11 annual calendar in the AIS/B handbook. Please plan trips and vacations during our school vacations so your child does not miss school. We also need parents’ support in prioritizing and monitoring homework and studying on a nightly basis to ensure your child´s academic success. Partnering to help all kids learn, parents and teachers together can have a profound effect on the lives of our children and make academic success possible.
We are beginning this year with many positive improvements and changes. First, we are quickly finishing our covered multi-purpose courts to protect our students from the strong sun as they practice athletic activities in both physical education classes and after-school extracurricular sports and activities. We also want to communicate to parents that we continue investing in our school library and books. After investing $34,805.91 USD in the 2008-9 school year, we invested $10,200.00 USD in the 2009-10 school year and have planned to invest another $13,688.17 USD this 2010-11 school year to complete our acquisition.
We also have one last addition to our school´s staff: Ms. Paola Llosa, who will be teaching Pre-Kinder. We are very excited about this addition as Ms. Llosa is highly qualified as she has recently completed her University of Auckland Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood in New Zealand. She also has her Masters in International Education from Framingham State College.
She has extensive teaching experience and we are confident she will be a great asset to our Pre-Kinder.
We are also beginning with a school improvement plan, based on AdvancED/SACS’ recommendations. First, we are adopting a comprehensive Pre-Kindergarten-12 curriculum that includes grade-level and course standards and benchmarks, the McREL Standards and Benchmarks. I encourage you to become familiar with these standards and benchmarks available at http://www.mcrel.org/compendium/browse.asp.
Secondly, we are adopting tests called Measures of Academic Progress™(MAP) in 3rd through 8th grade in order to determine your child´s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year and from year to year in the areas of Reading, Language Arts and Mathematics. At the same time, MAP tests will provide us with data to guide our teachers’ and school’s instructional decisions, helping us become a more effective school. MAP tests are unique in that as they are computerized and individualized, they adapt to be appropriate for your child´s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. And with MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child´s growth. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child´s individual growth and achievement. We will continue to administer SAT, TOEFL, and IB exams in 11th and 12th grade and will also use this data to guide our instructional decisions.
Thirdly, this year we have planned a more comprehensive staff development plan implementing eight student half-days throughout the year (refer to the annual calendar in the AIS/B handbook) when teachers will stay in the afternoon for training and development which will focus on the school improvement plan, the McREL standards and benchmarks, the MAP testing and how to use the data to inform instructional decisions, the school vision, the literacy action plan, and best practices.
Fourth, we have redistributed the Director´s previous tasks to the Primary and Secondary Area Directors. Ms. Paola Villarroel will now be Primary Director, Curriculum Director, General and College Counselor, and Conduct Director. Mr. Rodney Olguin will now be Secondary Director and IB Coordinator. Please direct questions or concerns in these areas directly to them.
Fifthand finally, we have a new organizational chart for the school that is available in the AIS/B handbook.
I believe these first five steps will raise the academic level at our school and make AIS/B even better. I look forward to a wonderful 2010-11 academic year in which, with our school improvement plan, we can all work together to improve our school, AIS/B, so that it can come even closer to reaching its full potential!
Sincerely,
Selena Skelly-Dorn
